We were thrilled to hear about a highly deserving award nomination for our very own Mrs. Julie Sheppard, a 5th grade teacher at North Shore Elementary and the advisor for the district’s History Club! Julie was notified earlier this month that she was selected as the Michigan senior division nominee for the Hannah E. (Liz) MacGregor Teacher of the Year Award. The award recognizes two outstanding National History Day teachers at the national level. Two winners will be selected from the pool of nominated teachers, one in the junior division and one in the senior division. These two teachers will receive a prize of $5,000! The winning individuals will be announced later this spring.
Julie has been truly impactful in the lives of many South Haven Public School students. The talents that make Julie an exceptional teacher are the same skills that make her a wonderful advisor. She teaches all subject matter thematically, helping students make connections between concepts and what they learn to their own lives and experiences. She empowers her students by brainstorming and supporting their efforts. She goes the extra mile and assists them in securing primary and secondary sources, even if that means long distance travel, and nurtures her students’ creativity as they develop their projects. Her students graduate with confidence as diverse learners and better citizens.
Julie and her team have represented South Haven and our school district at a national level ten times, with one national win, and she has received countless awards for her passion of connecting History Club with the community. The History Club volunteers its time, under Julie’s leadership, at many community events including their continued partnership with the Bailey Hyde Museum and the Historical Association of South Haven, and their recent participation in the 150th Anniversary of the City of South Haven Celebration.
Our community and school district are better due to the work that Julie does on a daily basis. We are so proud to call her a South Haven Ram. She truly is deserving of the Hannah E. (Liz) MacGregor Award!
