Posted on 08/10/2017

South Haven High School will launch 11 new courses to meet the rising demand for advanced learning and career-ready courses. The new courses offered will compare to courses offered at the top schools in the state. Courses include Game Design and Coding, Design and Create, Robotics Engineering, Honors Geometry, AP Chemistry, Honors Physics, Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry, Honors US History, AP Spanish, Writing Center and Script Writing /RAM-TV. Classes will be available for enrollment during the 2017 fall semester.

Danielle Hendry, the Curriculum Director for SHPS, worked with principal Jerry Sardina and assistant principal Scott Jackson to ensure rigorous and engaging courses are available to students at all learning levels. “At South Haven Public School we are committed to meeting the needs of all learners including our gifted and talented students. Not only do we ensure our struggling learners receive what they need but we also make sure our advanced students receive rigorous opportunities to grow and reach their full potential as learners. We listen to our parents and our community and are committed to providing amazing learning opportunities for all of our individual students. We push our students and challenge them to go above and beyond” says Hendry.

In addition to advanced courses, the school has also developed pathways towards career and technical training allowing students to learn in alignment with their interests during their time in high school. “Some students are passionate about traditional academic classes and want to push themselves to college readiness. Other students are passionate about skilled trades and want to push themselves towards career readiness. We look at student interests, goals and gifts so we can provide unparalleled opportunities for all students to align their academic experience at SHPS with their dreams for the future” says Hendry.

The newly renovated high school will feature state-of-the-art classrooms and equipment to support advanced, high-tech and hands-on learning and will be a state-leading STEM facility.

The South Haven School District serves 2,000 students in the Greater South Haven Area. Under Superintendent Dr. Robert Herrera’s leadership, the district has grown in its ability to provide rigorous academic opportunities to all students. As a result, district test score growth over the last few years has started to reflect this trend.
