Replacement Schedule of Gym Floor at South Haven High School

SOUTH HAVEN, MI – On Tuesday, May 6, 2014 voters generously approved the South Haven Public Schools Bond proposal to renovate South Haven High School. As the final components of the bond project were being completed this fall, South Haven Public Schools’ staff identified potential concerns regarding the newly installed gym floor at South Haven High School- specifically the observed delaminating or “lifting” of sections of the parquet flooring.

These concerns were immediately presented to the construction manager at Owen-Ames-Kimball Co. (OAK), the district’s architect at GMB Architecture and Engineering, and the flooring contractor. Upon further investigation, South Haven Public Schools, OAK, GMB, and the flooring contractor have come to an agreement regarding the need to replace the gym floor at the high school. A schedule for the replacement is being finalized and will take place at the end of the 201718 school year once classes have been dismissed for summer break.

Until the flooring can be replaced, South Haven Public Schools’ staff members are regularly inspecting the floor for additional signs of lifting. If additional problem areas arise, the flooring contractor will expedite all temporary repairs as a top priority to ensure a safe, playable facility through the remainder of the school year.

“The safety of our students and athletes is always our top priority,” said Superintendent of South Haven Public Schools, Dr. Robert Herrera. “Therefore we are committed to the continuous monitoring of the current gym floor and look forward to the replacement being installed this summer.”
