Ratcliffe Field Centennial Celebration

SHPS to celebrate Ratcliffe Field's Centennial
Posted on 09/06/2016
The public is invited to attend the Ratcliffe Field Centennial Celebration on Friday, Sept. 9, 2016, the same day as the first South Haven Public Schools home football game.  The event will take place at the field, located on Hubbard St., and will honor one of the oldest continuously-used high school athletic fields in the State of Michigan.

“Ratcliffe Field means a lot to our alumni and the whole community,” said Tara Wilkinson, SHPS Marketing Coordinator.  “So many people in South Haven have great memories of playing and attending sports, performing in the marching band, and graduating high school on this field, and now their children and grandchildren are making those memories too.  It’s going to be a fun, nostalgic evening for Rams of all ages!”

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. to a tailgate and carnival at the field, including an additional special entrance through the Historical Association of South Haven (HASH).  HASH is housed in the former Hartman Elementary school building next to the field, and will have a special Ratcliffe Field History display for the occasion.  The first 100 people through the entrances will receive a special commemorative gift.

The tailgate will include pizza from Brix Corner Oven and other treats from the SHPS Food Service Dept., and the free carnival will be run by various SHPS athletic teams and organizations.  Special commemorative T-shirts and programs will also be available for purchase throughout the evening – T-shirts are $10 and programs are $5.

The football game will begin at 7:00 p.m. against the Plainwell Trojans.  All former athletic staff members, band directors, and Ram alumni are encouraged to attend for special recognition prior to the start of the game.  The Purple Pride Marching Band will be joined by alumni band members for the pre-game show, and at half-time the Purple Pride will debut its season’s theme – Dragons.  There will also be a special half-time performance by the SHHS Cheerleading team.

Other special events are also scheduled for the evening:
•   The Memorial Room in the Arkins Fieldhouse, dedicated to all South Haven residents who gave their lives for their country, will be open for viewing.
•   SHPS will highlight some alumni athletes throughout the game who went on to achieve great athletic success after graduation.
•   Throughout the game, listen for other facts and trivia about Ratcliffe Field, as well as other important news and info from SHPS.
