Outdoor Learning Celebration

SHPS to celebrate gifts to Outdoor Learning Center
Posted on 08/30/2016
The public is invited to attend the Outdoor Learning Celebration at the North Shore Elementary Outdoor Learning Center at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016.  The event will highlight some new projects and upgrades to the area, and also thank all those who contributed to make these projects a reality.

"We have been developing the Outdoor Learning Center at North Shore for the past six years and it continues to grow,” said Rebecca Linstrom, 4th grade teacher at North Shore Elementary.  “This year we will be adding a Butterfly Garden, an interactive sculpture and archways in front of the two nature trails.  We know that getting kids outside is good for their brains and their bodies!  It's wonderful to have such amazing support from the community and we want to celebrate that support!"

The Outdoor Learning Center at North Shore Elementary has recently gotten several exciting additions, thanks to the generous contributions of many community organizations.

Art teacher Lisa Rostar also recently received a gift from both the SHPS Foundation and the South Haven Garden Club to fund an interactive butterfly sculpture that will be housed in the Outdoor Learning Center.  The butterfly includes a loom so that students can help weave the body of the butterfly.

Linstrom has also been working on a new garden at the North Shore Drive entrance of the school thanks to a Seeds for Education grant for plant materials from Wild Ones Natural Landscapers.  The Butterfly Garden will also benefit from an Eagle Scout project, organized by Michael Villins.  Villins will be constructing a brick border around the garden along with a sign, and will also look into qualifying it as an official Monarch Way-Station.

The fun, interactive family event will also include the planting of some milkweed around the base of the butterfly, as well as a release of monarch butterflies.  Linstrom’s students will tag the butterflies and the class will then attempt to trace their travels to Mexico.
