Superintendent Search South Haven Public Schools

In a unanimous decision at Tuesday’s special board of education meeting, the South Haven Board of Education voted to hire Mr. Kevin Schooley as the district’s next Superintendent of Schools, contingent on successful contract negotiations. The decision comes at the conclusion of a 4-month leadership search which included the development of a profile determined through community input and opinion, two rounds of interviews, a district site visit, and community candidate open house.

Mr. Schooley is a long-time resident of South Haven. He started his career as a special education teacher in Bay City, Michigan and served as an alternative learning program teacher at Central Elementary School in South Haven for 5 years through 1998. Following his time as a teacher, Mr. Schooley was an elementary principal in Watervliet where he became superintendent in 2010.

In his second interview, Mr. Schooley presented the board with his 90-day transition plan which consisted of familiarizing himself with the district, its strengths, and weaknesses through data review, sharing, and planning.

“I have been very pleased with the community’s reaction to our moving forward with Mr. Schooley. The hiring of a district’s superintendent is one of the most important and impactful decisions a school board can make and as elected officials it’s great to know that the community is supportive and excited about our selection,” said Board President, Laura Bos.

At the November 13, 2018 meeting, the board also voted to form a three-member committee to engage in negotiations with Mr. Schooley consisting of Laura Bos, Doug Ransom, and John Frost.
